Shazeal Taylor is an Indigenous midwife originally from the Northern Alberta community of Sandy Lake/ Wabasca and Bigstone Cree Nation member. Granddaughter of Alice Reid (Boskoyous), and Cathy Gullion, who passed on their knowledge of medicines, traditional values, and commitment to their community. Inspired by these teachings, Shazeal pursued formal training in midwifery while maintaining her deep connection to her family and community. Moving to Toronto for her education, graduating as a registered Midwife to return to Alberta to provide reproductive care to rural communities.
Birth work is not just about delivering babies but also about nurturing the whole family, supporting new parents, and fostering a strong community. With long term hopes of empowering future generations to carry on the practice of Indigenous midwifery and returning birth back to our communities.
